Holy Trinity Monastery Appeal

The Objects of the Appeal

We need help ourselves if we are to help others. Our most pressing need (and it really is urgent!) is for more accommodation, for both novices and guests, and for an endowment fund to enable us to go on doing many of the things we are already doing or hope to do in the future: improving our audio book service for the blind and visually impaired, developing our web site as an extension of the monastery into cyberspace, and above all, providing somewhere quiet and prayerful where people can stay for a few days to make a retreat or just "recharge the batteries". With the help of the Friends of Holy Trinity Monastery (FHTM) we are trying to raise £2M over a period of five years to make all this possible.

In the short term, we are breaking down our appeal into a number of categories or "mini-projects" with specific objects, e.g.

1. A Guest Room in the Monastery
In February/March 2009 we converted the old parish office. By doing all the work ourselves and furnishing the room with flat-pack pine furniture, we managed a complete refurbishment (redecorating, carpet, furniture, bed, mattress, light fittings and incidentals) for the sum of £1063.

2. Equipment for Veilaudio (formerly St Cecilia's)
All the computers and recording equipment are in terminal decline. To replace them and add the facility for making DAISY CDs we are going to need approximately £10,000 — just for equipment. Realistically, we need to aim at £50,000 as premises and running costs also need to be addressed and we are keen to maintain St Cecilia's as a free service. In the current economic climate, this is distinctly challenging. We have broken down the costs as follows:
  • premises and basic running costs: £5,000 p.a. and rising (we need to do some substantial electrical work and wage war on the woodworm again);
  • maintenance of existing audio library on cassette: £1,200 p.a.
  • replacement of equipment no longer fit for purpose: £2,500;
  • equipment for producing DAISY CDs and Mp3s: £3,000;
  • digital recording equipment for our team of volunteer readers: £4,000;
  • working fund and help with providing DAISY readers for Guild members unable to afford their own, etc. . . .

How are we Doing?

This is where you will find regular updates on the amounts the Appeal has raised.
  • Receipts from the plant sale organized by Mary and Damien (to whom our best thanks) total £91.
  • St Patrick's, East Ilsley, generously donated the sum of £644.80 which they raised at the Sheep Fair 2008 (our best thanks to them too).
  • The Friends' Concert "Music for Midsummer" 2008 and associated donations raised a total of £2637.22, an excellent result!
  • Donations towards the Guest Room total £360, which has covered the cost of most of the furniture and paint. Results of the Mini-Sale added a further £27 to this total.
  • The Friends' Concert "The Music of Shakespeare" 2009 and associated donations raised £2614, all of which will be devoted to our work for the blind.
  • Special Collection on 25 October 2009 at St Mary's and St Patrick's (our parish) raised £232.21 for our work for the blind. Thank you, everyone! This has subsequently been increased to £391.20!
  • Donations of £1,000 and £500 for St Cecilia's, now Veilaudio (donors wish to remain anonymous: we are very grateful).
  • Donation of £3,000 from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.
  • Donation of £1,000 from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.
  • The Parish of St Thomas of Canterbury, Fairford, has given £250 towards our work for the blind.
  • A donation from Buckfast Abbey, to support our work on the web.
  • Web donations of £100 from friends in Canada and the U.S.A.
