Digital BooksMagnificat was designed and made between 1999 and 2002 and is an early example of an ebook made by a private press (Digitalnun in a former incarnation, so to say). It uses the techniques of the 1990s to recreate some of the elements of the bookwork of an earlier age but was not intended as mere pastiche —it was a serious exploration of the possibilities of what was then called electronic publishing and an attempt to make available at low cost what otherwise would have proved prohibitively expensive.
The ebook incorporates the Chapter House paintings of D. Werburg Welch, Stanbrook Abbey, Worcester, which were not then open to public view, and a life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We are very grateful to the Abbess and Community of Stanbrook, the copyright owners, for allowing us to make the main part of the ebook available online and would ask all readers to respect the printing and downloading restrictions displayed at the beginning.
The files not shown included a short history of the monastery and its press with audio files set to open at certain pages: unusual then but commonplace now.
Lady Flower was first published by Veilpress in 2006 in an edition of fifty copies. This electronic edition is provided free of charge for your enjoyment. Click on the image to zoom.
The Blackfan Annals is an édition de luxe, published by the Royal and Pontifical English College of St Alban, Valladolid. This first volume in the College's A.C.S.A. series was designed and typeset by the nuns in three languages and contains a fascinating series of historical texts edited by the Reverend Peter Harris. Only 100 copies are available for sale, exclusively from Maggs Bros Ltd., 50 Berkeley Square, London W!J 5BA. Here, however, you can have a peep at a few of the pages. Publication date was 25 October 2008.
The second volume in the series, Fruits of Exile, was typeset in Latin, Greek, English and Spanish and contained numerous facsimile illustrations. A few pages are shown here with printer's marks to give you the flavour of a work-in-progress. The book was published in February, 2009 and is available only from Maggs.
